When my son was in third grade, roughly 45 years ago, all the kids in his reading group had to read all of the Caldecott winning medal books, then summarize the story on an index card. There were a lot of books then and I have wondered lately if they are still required to do that.

It was because of that assignment that I became interested in picture books and I still enjoy many today. A fairly recent title is Finding Winnie, the true story of the bear who became Pooh.

Reading and enjoying books with children truly makes for everlasting memories.

How precious this memory is… thank you for sharing it. I too have fond memories of reading her books to my girls, but those memories are dusty and faded. I doubt they would recall any of them.

But I will now go find her obituary, and revisit her books so I can revisit those days, and allow myself to slip back to that time when I too found them magical and meaningful.

A fitting way to honor her memory.

Thank you for this sweet & nostalgic post.

I am saddened by the loss of such a prolific and talented writer.

I am moved by the image of you & your sons in their pjs, post bath time, snuggling up and reading. It evokes my own memories of that most precious time of my motherhood life and and like you, it was also my favorite time of day with my children.

While working as a para librarian, Owl Moon was one of my go to storytime books and an all-time favorite. The Jane Yolen section of the children’s department was one of my favorite.

Halcyon days, indeed. ❤️

A pair of great horned owls moved into rhe palm tree across the road last March. I heard them before I saw them. Watching them, and then their offspring, was magical.
