I got The Secrets of Cooking for Christmas. Well, it was more like I told my husband to get it for me. It's wonderful! I've been reading it as I would a novel or a memoir. I made her one-pot mushroom pasta the other night and it was great.

So happy to see you here on Substack! It's the best place I've found in ages.

Of course you picked up the cookbook, too. I'm definitely eyeing the mushroom pasta. Mushrooms are huge around here (go figure) and I'm learning so much.

Yes, this is a great place.

Oh this makes me want to make an omelette! The struggle I now have with making them is that we don't have any non-stick teflon pans, and cook in cast iron or stainless steel. Is there a good way to make/flip an omelette in a non-stick pan? A half pound of butter might do the trick! And... I just realized I am reading Bee Wilson's book "First Bite" a fascinating look at how we learn to eat and like food. Great for anyone struggling to get their children to try new foods.

I often use cast iron, and I’m not doing a flip in the air, just a delicate lift and turn, so yes! I’m excited to discover a new food writer. She reminds me a bit of MFK Fisher

Such a lovely essay, Barbara! I did something similar with scrambled eggs a few years ago—focused on enjoying the process of making the best simple scrambled eggs I could. I make them often. I’ve put The Bear on my list and borrowed the cookbook from my library—thanks for sharing!

I think you will enjoy The Bear. It’s dark and tender and funny and intense. Glad to see you!

Oh, this makes me hungry! I am a failure at omlets but perhaps I will try again. And I love The Bear. Thanks so much for sharing this!

They are worth the time to figure it out in my opinion. Low heat! And isn't The Bear great? One of my favorites in recent years.

I have wondered whether you discovered The Bear, and am delighted that you found it. I have watched it twice--the second time a few months later as a binge to catch what I missed the first time. It's one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life--the writing, the casting, the camera work, the messed-up family, the food(!), and the passionate humanity of it all. I love workplace stories (Including all your books with working women in them), and The Bear is tremendously satisfying.

Happy holidays!
